How will it effect the UK?
- We import huge amounts of goods into the UK, especially food. With the effects of climate change on agriculture around the world – what we can buy and eat from international traders will have to change completely.
- You may have noticed the weather being more chaotic over the last few years. Global warming will cause longer, hotter heat waves, less frequent rain, but will increase the chance of more dangerous storms and flooding.
- Compared with 50 years ago, we now get more rain and snow, but on fewer days – So how heavy the storms are here in the UK is getting worse.
- Coastal waters have warmed up, changing the distribution of important commercial fish species and other marine animals. In some areas of Europe people can’t swim in the sea anymore for all the jellyfish that have come for the warm waters.
- Average sea levels around the UK are now about 10cm higher than they were in 1900.
- Parts of the world are going to become impossible for people to live there. We may see a big increase in ‘climate refugees’ coming to the U.K.
- And if ever the climate became really unsuitable here in the UK, it would be us who had to move out.
