Getting around

To explore the forms of transport used by people in your area.

Age group: any

How long it will take: 10 minutes first week and 30 minutes on the second week

What materials you will need: Copies of the 'Getting around' worksheet; flip chart paper and pens

The aim of the activity: To explore the forms of transport used by people in your area

What to do:

Explain to the group that they are going to carry out a survey of the way they and their families get around. Give each member several copies of the Getting around worksheet and ask them to collect information for themselves and others in their families during the coming week and bring the sheets back to the group with them the following week.

On the second week, collate all the information into one large chart showing all the miles travelled by each method of transport during the past week.

Discuss the following questions with the group:

  • Which of these methods use renewable energy and which use fossil fuels?
  • What do they think are the benefits and disadvantages of each type of energy use?
  • Can they suggest ways in which they can reduce their use of non-renewably powered transport
