A history of the future

Imagine you are living 50 years ahead and things have turned around – we are living in a cleaner environment. How did it happen?

Aim: to think about the immediate future by imagining that it has already passed.

Age group: 6-10, 11-15.

Number of participants: any.

Time required: 30 minutes.

Resources needed: A4, coloured pens.

What to do:

This is an alternative to the ‘Future Times’ activity that may be more accessible for the younger age.

Everyone is to imagine they are living in the future, 50 years from now. At this time the world has just achieved a major accomplishment - it has achieved a clean environment for everyone.

Create a picture history of what happened to get to that point. Drawings should have captions and show some of the steps along the way to a clean environment, over the 50 years. “50 years ago many were at risk to skin cancer…”, “45 years ago there was smog over many cities…”, “42 years ago a non polluting petrol was found..”, “40 years ago countries signed an agreement…” and so on.

Put these up around the marquee.

Extension:

Discuss:

  • How many different causes were there for the changes?
  • Do you think 50 years is realistic for this massive change? Why? Why not?
