Water

Two extremes. Rising tides and scarcity. Too much and too little.

There’s Too Much Water!

Here’s a global warming weather forecast…

Already in the last 100 years the sea has risen by an estimated 15 to 20 centimeters. And as the World gets hotter still the ice caps will begin to melt. All that melted ice water has to go somewhere – into the sea. This will cause the sea level to rise even further.

The increase in temperature will also cause the sea water to expand… so more water plus thermal expansion of oceans mean sea levels will rise further still.

We’ll see a lot more costal flooding, especially in low-lying river and island areas, affecting everywhere from Bangladesh to New York.

The poorest countries are likely to be the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Many people live in flood zones today, but by the year 2200, when the sea levels are higher, another 80 million people will live in danger of being flooded.

The salt in sea water contaminates farm land and drinking sources. So these people could not only lose their homes, but their livelihoods, food and water supply – unless climate change is tackled.

If you’re living in an area that already has a lot of rain expect things to get much wetter!

There’s Not Enough Water!

Dry areas will become drier. Lack of water already affects 1.7 Billion people throughout the world – water is desperately needed for drinking, industry and life, and without it people face devastation. Billions of people cannot afford for their countries to get any drier.

In some places rain won’t fall as often as it used to. So water resources for drinking and irrigation will be affected.

There is a prediction that by the year 2080, 3 Billion people could be living without enough water. Again the poorest areas of the world will be the greatest affected - Northern Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

We may see wars started as the need for water becomes more desperate.
