Calculate your global footprint
We all leave some mark on the environment. But how big is our footprint. Do this quiz and then commit yourself to finding ways to tread more lightly on the earth.
Aim: to take a look at our personal impact on the planet.
Age group: 11-15, 16+.
Number of participants: any.
Time required: 30 minutes.
Resources needed: Global footprint questionnaire.
What to do:
Split into small groups and give each a copy of the questionnaire, or else just pass the questionnaire around the village, perhaps informally during the time before or after a meal. People can use paper to record their scores and calculate.
Compile the results and display them in the marquee or report them at you village’s Council Circle. Find out if other villages are doing this activity and compare your results.
Think of ways in which the results can be used to bring about positive outcomes leading to action and change, - ideas for minimizing our footprints.
Extension:
You may be able to find a creative way to show or display this footprint and what it represents.

Estimating your ‘ecological footprint’
Total your score by adding up the circled values from the above questions.
For an estimate of your Ecological Footprint based on these questions use the key below.
From the information collected in this questionnaire, your estimated "personal" ecological footprint is:
Your score = _______________
- If your score is less than 150 your Ecological Footprint is smaller than 4.0 hectares
- If your score is 150-350 your Ecological Footprint is between 4.0 hectares and 6.0 hectares.
- If your score is 350-550 your Ecological Footprint is between 6.0 hectares and 7.8 hectares (i.e., the Canadian average).
- If your score is 550-750 your Ecological Footprint is between 7.8 hectares and 10.0 hectares.
- If your score is more than 750 your Ecological Footprint is greater than 10.0 hectares.
Now respond! Quickly think of THREE things you can do to that will consume less and reduce your impact on the environment.
