Future scenarios

Are you an optimist or a pessimist about the future of the planet? Whichever your tendency, it helps to be an activist.

Aim: to think about the future and the range of perspectives we can have on what will happen in the future.

Age group: 16+.

Number of participants: any.

Time required: 30 minutes.

Resources needed: scenarios.

What to do:

It has been said there are five different kinds of ways of looking at the future.

Do you recognise yourself in any of these and does your perspective lead you to any particular actions?

Discuss as an informal group:

  • What do you think of these categories?
  • Have these thinkers got it all wrong?
  • Is there a scenario missing?
  • Where do the organisations you belong to fit into these? Do they have a different outlook or perhaps a combination of more than one?
  • Where do you think Global Village and the aims of the Millennium Development Goals fit in?
