Age Range: Any

Aim: to take responsibility for nurturing a tree and appreciate the value of trees

You will need: tree seeds, soil, pot, water, or a young tree

Duration: 20 minutes then ongoing

What to do:

Trees are essential for life. They give us oxygen, and absorb harmful carbon dioxide. We also use them for food, shelter and fuel, and they provide a habitat for numerous animals, birds and insects.

Plant a tree seed, and care for it while it grows. You may need to plant several seeds, as not all of them will germinate and start growing. You will need to remember to water your seedling when needed, and keep it somewhere where there is enough light. When it grows bigger plant it somewhere outside.

Alternatively adopt a tree in your neighbourhood. Find a young tree that is growing, maybe at the side of a road or somewhere where it could get damaged. Check on it regularly to make sure it is healthy, and maybe water it if needed. Watch as your tree grows bigger and stronger. Remind other people in your community that you should care for your trees, because of how valuable they are for people and the environment.
