Environmental cartoons

Environmental cartoons can be hard-hitting. Do they inspire you to action, make you depressed, amuse you? Why not draw your own?

Aim: to think about the strength of using cartoons to hit home points about the environment.

Age group: Any

Number of participants: 10-20

Time required: 30 minutes

Resources needed: cartoons (cut up)

What to do:

Pass the cartoons around the group.

Do you think that that these cartoons are a good way of raising awareness about the impact humans are having on the environment (and other points that they are making)?

Do any of them make you think and challenge yourself about what you are doing to help?

Get into groups of four. You have been asked by a local authority (municipality) to choose a cartoon to go in a youth section of a local community centre. They are concerned that all young people using the centre learn about issues of the environment.

Decide, in five minutes of debate and discussion, which one you will choose and why.

Present your choices and reasons to the other groups.

Extension:

Instead of choosing one, you are commissioned to come up with your own environmental cartoon.
