The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) at De Montfort University is a specialist research, consultancy and teaching group based within De Montfort University, which aims to make a worthwhile and significant contribution to sustainable development. The Institute's work focuses on the clean, efficient use of energy in the built environment and developing ways in which greater use can be made of renewable energy in domestic buildings, industry and commerce.

Research undertaken by the Institute's multi-disciplinary team covers a seamless range from basic modelling, through component and building simulation and performance evaluation, to city scale energy and environment analysis, management, planning and policy. Social research focuses upon the social, psychological, institutional and political aspects of sustainable development, spanning both transport related issues and the social implications of distributed, low carbon, energy technologies.

Teaching focuses on two MS course "Climate Change and Sustainable Development" and Energy and Sustainable Building design”. PhD research includes a wide range of energy related subjects, ranging from “the nalysis of half hourly data in buildings” to “attitudes of car drivers”.

The Institute has worked with both the Woodcraft Folk and the Centre for Alternative Technology on a number of projects. These have included, Engineering and Physical Sciences research Council funded work related to the Global Village 2006 International Youth festival and a Pilkington Energy Efficiency Trust Project on young people and energy in buildings.

The Institute is part of the c-change management team and will be measuring the success of c-change, through questionnaires, discussions with participants and gathering other relevant information.
